Punch Line

Punch Line
by Jacques Poulin-Denis and Grand Poney (Montréal)
January 30, 7:30 PM at the Mary Irwin Theatre

Punch Line, a solo work by Jacques Poulin-Denis, borrows as much from the style of stand-up comedy as it does from the intimacy and depth of a confession. In the guise of an artist talk, Poulin-Denis embodies a kaleidoscope of possible characters, fragmented and intercut, meticulously choreographed and absolutely unexpected. Joyful, ironic, insightful and humorous, he reveals himself slowly, then abruptly, and hovers between the reality of a human body and the fictions it can manifest. Poulin-Denis materializes our inner monologues, then shifts the frame.

A ‘punchline’ is, of course, the culmination of a joke. The set-up gets us thinking one thing and then hits us where we weren’t expecting it. Punch Line is a salute to the imagination of both artist and spectator; to the beauty and insight in our collective imagination.
